Critics Consensus

Aside from a shaky final act, Insidious is a very scary and very fun haunted house thrill ride.

Director James Wan here proves himself very adept at building dramatic tension and making you anxious about the things going on in your peripheral vision. Go to Full Review

If the film was attempting to be more than just a horror movie, it doesn't work on that level either. Go to Full Review

While not necessarily scary, the story is completely absorbing and chock full of surprises with an outstanding ensemble cast. It is so far the best looking one in the bunch thanks to director and coeditor James Wan and not one, but two cinematographers Go to Full Review

I think one of the reasons Insidious has never quite reached the popularity (or noteriety) of the other Wan-Whannel creations is the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink scattershot approach it takes to genre. Go to Full Review

Gunner I @RT64755212 5 hrs ago This is an excellent movie. I could watch it over and over again. And it's great to watch around Halloween. Lots of jump scares. See more Wayne K @WayneKelso 3 days ago It’s taken me a long time to get round to watching any Insidious films. Maybe because there are just so many in the series it feels like a chore to watch them. This first instalment might fall into a lot of the traps that modern horror films do, but it also does a great job of building suspense, creating a creepy atmosphere and catching you off guard with its scares. I found Patrick Wilsons’s acting to be pretty wooden, with a permanent expression of ‘My bank card just declined for some reason’, but the rest of cast do a great job, with the exception of the Tucker & Specs comedy double act that feels completely out of place. It has its problem, including a haphazard, overwrought 3rd act, but it manages to do a lot right, and mostly delivers on it’s soul wandering premise. It’s easy to see why Blumhouse keeps coming back to the Insidious well time and time again. See more Ben T @Ben_T 6 days ago This one wasn’t too bad.
