Critics Consensus

Insidious: Chapter 3 isn't as terrifying as the original, although it boasts surprising thematic depth and is enlivened by another fine performance from Lin Shaye.

As middling, somewhat serviceable horror fare, it delivers its own share of jump scares, but whatever visceral effect it might have had wears off the instant the credits begin to roll. Go to Full Review

Whannell does a creditable job with the film. He's not as bold as Wan about mounting a sequence, but he's no slouch about the psychology of screen horror. Go to Full Review

The quiet stretches actually serve their purpose here, creating a sense of intimacy with the characters as opposed to simply marking time between the shocks. Go to Full Review

While it is not top shelf horror, it does get legitimately frightening, the metaphor is strong, and any movie starring Shaye is worth the time and cost. Go to Full Review

Prequels represent terrible filmmaking. Sequels create drama and suspense; prequels deliver trivia. Go to Full Review

Much like the Saw or Paranormal Activity franchises, the stories have run out but the filmmakers cannot resist making another sequel. Go to Full Review

Wayne K @WayneKelso 14 hrs ago The 3rd film in the Insidious series is a prequel with little connection to the first film besides having some of the same characters in it. In other words, the franchise is already running low on ideas but the executives see dollar signs so this is what we get: A frustrating succession of cheap jump scares and ear-piercing musical stingers. My best guess is it was made because the character of Elise was proving far too popular to not be exploited, so she has a much more prominent role this time. There are some genuinely creepy moments when the horror is done subtly and, ahem, insidiously, but Leigh Whannell too often falls back on tired tropes and hackneyed tactics to scare the viewers. The profoundly annoying Specs and Tucker are back but thankfully their shtick is pared back this time round, hopefully due to audience feedback. If it didn’t have such a recognisable name attached to it there would be little fanfare, but it does, and it made money, so the Insidious train rolled on.
