The banishing of dogs akin to the mass deportation of immigrants. Trash island. Truly depressing. One of the only parts I liked was the wasbi poison scene. I couldn’t tell if it was my own depression or the movie that made me want to cry. The stressful pace of this movie had me on edge. Even with all of this, I appreciated the political view. This movie made me think about activism. Wes Anderson definitely has a weird way of doing it. I felt a disgust about my own nation while watching. In all the grief and frustration of the many protagonists there was warm relief of friendship, loyalty and, determination. With almost no antagonist characters but, the mayor, being one. This movie made me uncomfortable. Possibly for the best. The animation is detailed, creative, and consistently beautiful, making the world feel genuinely alive. The humor is also on point, balancing absurd comedy with darker moments without ever feeling out of place. Most importantly, the characters are incredibly well written, each having their own personalities, motivations, and emotional weight. I especially loved the film’s parallels to World War II, particularly its themes of propaganda, authoritarianism, discrimination, and the persecution of an entire group of people. Those elements gave the story a surprising amount of depth beneath its quirky surface. Isle of Dogs is a very good movie, with fantastic visuals, sharp humor, memorable characters, and a surprisingly thoughtful story.
