Newsha S @Newsha Jan 9 This movie was an insult to Charlotte Brontë and to Jane Eyre fans worldwide. The Jane played here was so unbelievably drab, unimaginative, shallow, that it hurt my eyes just to watch her, and for God's sake what's up with Hollywood and tall bodies? Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester are both on the shorter side, especially for Jane it is soo important: She is supposed to be "plain, obscure, poor and little"! The script just barely tried to catch some important scenes from the novel and Rochester was played magnificently well and I was almost sold, even if it didn't look like him, but the big, unseemly blot on the whole movie was the horrid casting of the heroine herself. Can't believe I paid the money to buy this. It wasn't even worth the rent. Having read the book, I liked how some passages were adapted, but a lot of the bigger scenes and plotlines were ignored or poorly done. The story feels rushed thus resulting in a lack of chemistry between the main characters. The book is very long, so it is difficult to adapt into a 2 hour film. The film, compared to the book, is rather weak. The characters feel bland, and Mia is totally miscast. She's not Jane—neither in appearance nor demeanour. And it’s not just the famously reserved nature of English ladies—it’s a complete miss when it comes to capturing the essence of the character. At least Fassbender brought some charisma to the table. The plot is overly simplified, which is understandable—trying to squeeze 670 pages into 2 hours is just too much, and everything ends up feeling rushed and compressed. What I did like was the chemistry between Mia and Fassbender. That moment when she cries out, “God help me!” as she begs for the strength to resist Rochester, my heart shattered. The pacing of the movie hurt it so much I felt like I was watching an early cut of it. The third act failed horribly with little to no payoff for what had been built up.
