Drawn in a simple but evocative graphic-novel style, this is not an aesthetically dazzling animated feature, but its unshowy nature underlines the considerable emotional power of the story. Go to Full Review Laura Clifford Reeling Reviews Mar 9, 2022

Nov 3, 2021 Highly recommend - have watched it twice. Based on a true story, Aurel's magnificent animated feature film introduces us to Josep Bartoli (1910-1995), the Spanish illustrator who fled Franco's dictatorship and wound up in a brutal internment camp in France. Befriended by a guard, we follow Bartoli's escape to Paris and then Mexico where he became friends with artists Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera. "Josep" offers broad appeal - a compelling personal story of survival; world history; French and Spanish culture; illustration; the relationship between art and war; human compassion; the healing power of art. More relevant for the real story it tells than for its cinematographical values. See more Read all reviews
