Critics Consensus

Despite its thin plot, Liar Liar is elevated by Jim Carrey's exuberant brand of physical humor, and the result is a laugh riot that helped to broaden the comedian's appeal.

I would tell you that this is a loud, obvious, one-joke movie, but most of you would run out and pony up the eight bucks to see it anyway.

Pretty funny, at least during those moments when it doesn't turn into goo.

Carrey has never been better - that is to say funnier, or more controlled. He's reached a higher performance plateau here, playing a real human being we care about rather than a goon figure.

Jim Carrey is pure comedy gold here. The actor takes a simple, fun premise up to hilarious heights, thanks to his incredible (physical) comedic talents. [Full review in Spanish]

Its not just Carrey as a comedic performer that makes this movie so enjoyable, its him as a very flawed, but very loving, father.

I like the idea, but I feel like the entire second half could have done more with inability to lie. Plus it was just really weird to me. That's the truth.

A simple curse turns everyday dishonesty into comic torture in Liar Liar, a showcase for Jim Carrey at his most gloriously unhinged. His elastic physical comedy and razor-sharp timing carry the film, particularly in the courtroom, where a lawyer suddenly incapable of lying faces the perfect professional nightmare. Beneath the manic antics, the strained father-son relationship gives the story genuine warmth and keeps its familiar lesson from becoming too sugary. The trouble is that the supporting characters are thin, and the central gag occasionally gets stretched into increasingly elaborate excuses for Carrey to suffer. Some sequences hit harder than others, but the movie’s energy rarely flags. Broad, unabashedly 90s and occasionally overextended, Liar Liar succeeds because Carrey can turn even the simplest premise into a full-body comic spectacle.

I'd be a Liar Liar by denying how much I enjoyed this film, and despite its distinct flaws, the classic Jim Carrey comedy makes this a more memorable part of his filmography!

Peak 90s silly dumb fun chaos and I was absolutely here for it. Kept me laughing the entire way through. The ending went on a bit over dramatic, Still was a massive fun watch. Pure Jim Carrey comfort comedy gold.
