Critics Consensus

London Has Fallen traps a talented cast -- and all who dare to see it -- in a mid-1990s basic-cable nightmare of a film loaded with xenophobia and threadbare action-thriller clichés.

London Has Fallen is another one of those forgettable end-of-winter action films that don't really make much common sense but are really fun to watch when you are distracted with popcorn.

For a bullet-a-minute action/thriller, London Has Fallen is good. Never great.

If it wasn’t for the more believable premise, the moments of fatherhood and Gerard Butler’s performance, this would also be a huge fail. For some audiences that won’t be enough and it’ll come off cold but for others, there is some fun to be had here.

“London Has Fallen” is an action fan’s dream come true and a worthy follow-up to Mr. Fuqua’s 2013 hit.

There are a couple of shootouts that are an absolute blast. It’s too bad there isn’t enough surrounding the action to make this worthwhile.

A sequel that suffers from a frustrating shift in focus. Instead of maintaining the frenetic action in the corridors and on the streets, the plot gets too bogged down in political conspiracies and behind-the-scenes meetings that completely break the film's pacing. Gerard Butler's charisma and a few tactical combat sequences still save the day, but the narrative bureaucracy leaves this adventure a few notches below the original.

It's absurd but comically so. How the f**k do people get the budget to make this kind if film?

I watched this and its predecessor on IFC last night because I don’t think I saw them when they came out. Now I know why. I think I also know why the mass casualty action films of the 90s stopped being blockbuster material. Sept 11, Sandy Hook and all the mass shootings since made it hard to watch this kind of bloodbath for most people. Even my father, who passed the year this came out, couldn’t take this stuff anymore. He hated Law Abiding Citizen, and I grew up watching cop movies with him. Butler can keep making them for his diminishing audience, but, as he learned with Greenland 2, he had better keep the budgets low or he’ll continue to lose money. Maybe it’s time to get into another genre.

Very thin story — this genre has seen dozens of better films.

At this rate, Banning is in class with Wick, Bourne and Hunt. Major one man army vibes with the quippy retorts to boot. Entertaining.
