In a future society, time-travel exists, but it's only available to those with the means to pay for it on the black market. When the mob wants to eliminate someone, it sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a looper lies in wait to finish the job. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such hired gun, and he does his job well -- until the day his bosses decide to "close the loop" and send Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) back in time to be killed.

Critics Consensus

As thought-provoking as it is thrilling, Looper delivers an uncommonly smart, bravely original blend of futuristic sci-fi and good old-fashioned action.

A breath of fresh air as we creep into the heavy fall dramas and awards glitz, Looper will likely not be forgotten as the film that showed up and got the job done.

I found myself dreaming of the days when Willis would take a rest from Die Hard-ing to do character cameos of unexpected depth and pathos: Pulp Fiction, Nobody's Fool, and a few others. Now he clings to stoic longevity, and shoots people.

Yes, it's a B movie sci-fi thriller, but not many prestige pictures have this much going on underneath the surface.

For all its detailed sci-fi worldbuilding and convoluted timelines, it’s the film’s emotions that endure: empathy for the people we are today and hope for the people we might become tomorrow.

"Looper" becomes a bit of a different and, unfortunately, slower and more coincidental movie from its excellent, creative, and thrilling set-up.

I was always a sucker for time-travel movies and the mind-bending paradoxes that materialise from baffling scenarios of crafty science fiction.

I have no idea why these scores are so high for this movie. A mess from the beginning to the end. I was too confused by the time machine until they showed it clearly way too late in the film. And I just know they thought this ending was going to be mind-blowing. Whatever.

This is truly an incredible movie! What a masterpiece. Glad to chose today to rewatch this gem of a movie. It's a fresh and original idea and a great story! The ending was suprising and original and land perfectly. The cast was incredible. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt really did their part. This was a fun rewatch! They don't make interesting and fresh movies like these anymore, wich is sad!

Good fun. Nice mix of action, drama and romance for a sci-fi. And a fun take on time travel.

Visually spectacular with a slick feel to it's action scenes, Looper offers up a thrilling ride which has you fully immersed in it's captivating storyline between Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt. The only slight let down is the pacing towards the end, as it feels rushed in an attempt to tie everything up in what is otherwise an excellent tale of morals, self doubt and conflict.
