Critics Consensus

Man from Reno rises on the strength of solid performances and a sharp script, adding up to a densely plotted neo-noir with some subtle twists.

I'm always happy to see actors of color in film, but even more so I am happy to see them in good films.

A story that yields its secrets slowly but sinuously, making the most of its language and cultural differences.

Boyle, known best for a string of winning romantic comedies (Surrogate Valentine, Daylight Savings) now finds himself making a successful leap to the dark side with this decidedly "hard-Boyled" genre picture.

Fresh and invigorating... a firm grasp on story and development. Tension builds brilliantly...Characters are extremely well-crafted with performances to match.

This subdued, almost ephemeral, bilingual murder mystery seems designed more for fans of detective fiction than for film noir nuts. That said, it still possesses a sly potency.

As soon as one of the clues provided is a head of lettuce that falls out of the suitcase the man leaves behind, you know "Man From Reno" is far from your standard-issue procedural.

An enjoyable moody crime mystery. The story was a slow burn, the perfect Sunday evening watch.

I love a good mystery. This one unfolded slowly with an unexpected ending. Not the ending I might have hoped for, but clearly not formulaic. So it held my interest and was entertaining.

A pretty color pallet and solid cinematography helped this slow-burn of a thriller move into the mid-(70s). Pepe Serna as Sheriff Paul Del Moral became more likeable as the movie progressed. Ayako Fujitani was a little bland at first, but eventually came into her own. Many reveals throughout, some more satisfying than others. A pleasantly shocking twist. Oh, and there are turtles.

just finished watching man from Reno.. it is a movie almost too awful to describe. unlikable characters in comic, incompetent detection. I find it hard to believe that critics and other viewers gave this movie the rating they did.
