What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masterminds' great cast and stranger-than-fiction true story are largely wasted on a scattershot comedy with a handful of funny moments and far too much wackiness.

Galifianakis' cluelessness can tickle, but he's having a progressively difficult time making things feel fresh. Go to Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader Oct 5, 2016

Here, Hess amps up the most obnoxious excesses of his entire cast and lets their grating bad-improv skills run amok. There’s barely a laugh in the entire film. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Aug 18, 2021

Nobody would ever mistake Masterminds for a good movie ... but it would be criminal to deny the huge laughs strewn throughout, sneakily exploding like depth charges at random intervals. Go to Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Dec 5, 2020

Brian K @RT90540152 Oct 2, 2026 Having served a Mormon mission in the Midwest (just as Hess did), I get the nuance of these characters. Like the true story, they are grounded in a hilarious, interesting, character rich reality which critics are obviously unaware of. If you appreciate observing people and celebrate the quirky, odd and uninhibited... you'll enjoy this great film. See more Allison M @AllisonMarlow Aug 30, 2026 I loved it! If you remember the crime irl then you'll love this dark comedy starring some of our favorite comedian actors. See more Laura W @lamichelle2 Jul 1, 2026 I can’t believe the audience rated this so low! I loved it! Thanks to Zach Galifinakas, so many laughs, he plays the role perfectly. Stellar cast. See more Michael D @RT54178660 Jun 10, 2026 Dull, predictable watch. It doesn't really bring much new to the table and has some pretty awful pacing. The cast does what they can with a script that is DOA. See more donnie M @RT64375194 Jun 7, 2026 can't handle the way Owen Wilson talks-same in every movie-too much and too fast and not funny-3 stars for Zach and Kristen and the hitman who 'are' funny See more Mitchell C. @Mitchellcross May 29, 2026 It’s a goofy comedy. If you like the actors, you’ll like this movie. Let’s not get too deep here, people. See more Read all reviews
