Alain E @AlainE Apr 7, 2025 An excellent psychological drama. After her only son is killed in a hit and run accident, his mother becomes consumed trying to exact revenge. There is a Mercedes coupe involved and a firearm, but the action being by the lake of Lausanne there are no high speed chases or fatalities. The protagonists are humans with positive and negative characteristics. The resolution involves accepting what happened and keeping the memories immortalized by the mortal Steve Jobs. The movie hits its targets and despite its theme avoids cheap sentimentality. With the assistance of a private investigator, she is able to track down the perpetrators of the crime with the intention of meting out justice as she perceives it. While Moka certainly builds tension throughout based simply on the tragic circumstances, it is more of a character study than a traditional thriller, focusing on Diane's grief and her insatiable need to exact vengeance for her loss. Devos gives a remarkable performance, her eyes expressing her deep sorrow more than any words could ever convey. While none of it feels original from a story point of view, It is worth watching due to its flawless execution and penetrating emotions. See more Aug 3, 2018 Loved this movie. The acting was very believable and engaging. The photography and cinematography really moved the story along. The underlying tragedy was present in several fronts. See more Jul 25, 2017 Don't waste your time! , See more Jun 12, 2017 More of a straight drama than a psychological thriller "Moka's" tension unfolds by way of the audience guessing as to how and when and if "Helene" will exact her measure of justice on her unknowing suspects and indeed if that is all they are...the correct pair responsible for the hit-and-run death of her teen-age son and only child. "Moka" is at its best when the two lead actresses are "squaring off" against each other. The grieving Mother sizing up her mark w/ probing questions and the salon owner wondering what this stranger telling tales about herself is really up to. "Moka" would have been better served w/o extraneous male lead characters; things tend to bog down or become quickly and uncomfortably awkward when given screen time. "Moka" is a slow-burn exercise in bad judgements and hidden agendas going sideways. At an economical 90 minutes it's worth viewing for those interested. Be advised "Moka's" 1.5 hours feel closer to 2. See more Read all reviews
