Critics Consensus

A fun '80s adventure with a slightly scary twist, The Monster Squad offers tween-friendly horror with just enough of a kick.

The story unfolds at a furious pace. This is an action-packed movie in the truest sense.

Squad's gleeful monster mash anticipates bloated CGI orgies like Van Helsing, which likely cost a hundred times as much, yet boasts a hundredth of Squad's scrappy, ramshackle charm.

It's all too cartoonish to be offensive.

Severed from the stories and atmosphere that first gave them birth, the monsters only get in each other's way and are rendered completely ineffective.

The plotline was rather thin – a bunch of kids team up to take on all those classic movie monsters – but it was the execution of it that worked.

This is essentially The Goonies meets the universal monster movies of the 1940's and I'm all here for it. I enjoyed every second and it's a major crime that this film isn't talked about as much, Stan Winston also smashes it out of the ball park with his awesome special effects. I'll definitely be adding this one to my Halloween rotation.

Very solid... for a kids movie. Kinda like the cross between a chicken wing and "Saturday the 14th" in a way. Nothing else here but monster antics for better or worse
