Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives by scavenging and petty theft. He stumbles into a new career as a cameraman and -- armed with a camcorder and police scanner -- begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a shopworn news director (Rene Russo) who welcomes the chance to raise her station's ratings, Louis goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the "money shot."

Critics Consensus

Restless, visually sleek, and powered by a lithe star performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler offers dark, thought-provoking thrills.

Although I was able to put aside my knowledge that nothing occurring in this film would happen in reality, there are moments in the film where I was pulled out of it...

Nightcrawler, on its surface, is a relatively straightforward thriller, built around a slightly improbable but very effective main character, a man who starts as an antihero and plunges straight ahead toward villainy.

But this is Gyllenhaal’s show, easily the best performance of his career in perhaps the best movie of an already remarkable body of work.

Nightcrawler is an excellent example of a thriller with a script and visuals that grab the audience from the beginning and doesn't let go until the very end.

In a knockout performance, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Louis Bloom, the type of guy who would not only sell his own mother but would chop her up into tiny pieces to facilitate the transaction.

Great performance by Jake Gyllenhal. A sociopathic ambulance chaser willing to sacrifice anything for the perfect shot.

If you want to watch a movie in the NIGHT, CRAWL onto this. "Nightcrawler", the movie about a serious man on his way to crime journalism, is actually a great movie to see. I really actually do love movies of edge - if you watch more than your usual genres, more parts of your mind will open up. I can always go for Jake Gyllenhaal in dark movies. In this, he portrayed Lou Bloom (the serious man I was talking about above), he was 33 years old being serious & handsome. It no longer matters what I said about him when I reviewed "The Day After Tommorow". It was a way to be able to experience crime scenes for the viewer. It was the tale of how a brick hearted man, I could relate, succeed as a crime journalist, where the viewer can learn how to report crime just like him. He lives in a cruel world for a good reason.
