After successfully robbing five casinos in one night, Danny Ocean and his crew of thieves have big problems. Casino owner Terry Benedict demands that Ocean return the money, plus millions more in interest. With such a charismatic cast, it’s impossible for "Ocean’s Twelve" to be an awful bore. But it’s an underwhelming case of six of stars, half-a-dozen of the other that doesn’t let everyone, including the audience, in on the fun.

Ocean’s Twelve works best when it stops trying to match the clean precision of Ocean’s Eleven and embraces its looser European style. Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, and Lake Como give the movie a stylish travelogue quality, while the jazzier, more experimental rhythm helps it avoid feeling like a simple Vegas repeat. The cast still has great chemistry, with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and the returning ensemble carrying the movie through sheer personality. Vincent Cassel is a strong addition as the Night Fox, and his laser-dance sequence is one of the sequel’s most memorable moments. The biggest problem is the plot. It piles on twists, fake-outs, debts, rivalries, and reveals until the cleverness becomes unnecessarily confusing. The Tess-as-Julia-Roberts gag is bold but also distracting. Ocean’s Twelve is stylish and interesting, but it is not as focused, clean, or satisfying as the first film.

While not quite as good as Ocean’s Eleven, Julia Roberts playing Tess pretending tobe Julia Roberts may be one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
