In this award-winning adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the Charles Dickens novel, 9-year-old orphan Oliver Twist (Mark Lester) falls in with a group of street-urchin pickpockets led by the Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and masterminded by the criminal Fagin (Ron Moody). When Oliver's intended mark, Mr. Brownlow (Joseph O'Conor), takes pity on the lad and offers him a home, Fagin's henchman Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) plots to kidnap the boy to keep him from talking.

Critics Consensus

Oliver! transforms Charles Dickens' muckraking novel into a jaunty musical Victorian fairytale, buoyed by Ron Moody's charming star turn and Onna White's rapturous choreography.

Carol Reed has just made the kind of movie they don’t make anymore, and it’s as good as ever -- maybe better, coming when it’s more difficult to do.

The most important thing about [Oliver!] is pleasure, the sheer delight of a movie that can change the lives of kids who see it -- for the better, for the better -- and serve as a public bath for adults to luxuriate in, sing in, get cleansed in.

In the constant seesaw of realism/fantasy it is hard for anyone to keep one clear thread continuously in mind, and most of the performances are as muddled and indecisive as you might expect.

It certainly does have a few things to like about it, but it's just not quite enough to lift it out of its somewhat ho-hum nature, a fact that is clearly not helped by the film's over-stretched runtime.

Director Carol Reed manages to accentuate the grit and gravitas of the drama without breaking the mirthful musical mood.

The songs, the dancing, the brilliantly strong characters (Moody, Reed, Wallis) the drama, all wrapped in a gritty, working class story which didn't hide from portraying brutal social issues such as exploitation, 'wife beating,' violence, excess drinking, theft, stealing, poverty, entrapment, coercion and good v evil, had me spellbound. This isn't some gooey, syrupy musical with a silly ending. For 1968, this was hardcore drama with Oliver Reed, having it large in his character as Bill Sykes, using poor but pathetic Nancy (the excellent Shani Wallis) as his personal punchbag who ends up betraying him, and pays the ultimate price, to re-unite Oliver with his rich relations. I was close to tears a few times. I admit it. Poor Nancy. And what about the other urchins? Destitute and living in squalor. I can't leave it there without saying Ron Moody was the star of the show. Unbelievable. His 'I think I'd better think it out again' song. It still gives me goosebumps. A truly wonderful movie.
