Critics Consensus

Ouija: Origin of Evil swerves its franchise's planchette unexpectedly to YES with a surprisingly scary and dramatically satisfying follow-up to its lackluster predecessor.

This is not a subversive horror film by any stretch, but it is regardless a satisfying, visually striking one.

None of those rules apply here. It is literally every man, woman, and child for his- or herself. Which is the refreshing part about this film and, perhaps more importantly, it revives the franchise.

Ouija giddily zips between haunted house thriller, exorcism drama and skillful period piece, all wrapped up in a neat and terrifying little bow.

If you’ve seen any of the conjuring movies, you’ve seen this. If you’ve seen any of the insidious movies, you’ve seen this. If you’ve seen any movie with the words "the haunting of…" in the title, you’ve seen this.

There are many much better supernatural thrillers out there, as well as much better Mike Flanagan films.

"the movie approaches all the things we're expecting with just a little bit more grit and weirdness than we anticipate coming from a studio-sheened horror flick"

The entire movie kept me on edge, wondering what was going to happen next. The story was engaging and suspenseful from beginning to end. The script isn’t completely clear, and even by the ending it’s hard to understand exactly what happened or what will happen next. Still, that mystery makes it even more interesting and keeps you thinking. It’s a great movie for anyone who wants to get scared

More proof of Mike Flanagan's horror expertise. Through a combination of original scares and tributes to some great horror hits (such as the body contortions of The Last Exorcism), this film has some of the best surreal horror I've seen in years. And, for anyone who likes watching movies in a series by order of release, but has heard the 2014 original is terrible, you absolutely do not need to watch Ouija (2014) first to completely follow this plot. Enjoy!

Not Flanagan’s best work, not his worst by far. Starts off kind of goofy, a little campy maybe, but ends up pretty horrifying and definitely intense. Fans of the genre will enjoy.
