Critics Consensus

This remake of The Poseidon Adventure delivers dazzling special effects. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that any of the budget was left over to devote to the script.

The movie is just what you'd expect: skimpy, almost laughable characterizations surrounded by claustrophobically suspenseful action sequences. Go to Full Review Brian Tallerico UGO Mar 24, 2007

Petersen's expert direction ensures it remains gripping, keeping the tension ratcheted right up and commendably steering it all home within 100 minutes. Go to Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast May 13, 2026

A totally decent FX extravaganza, even if the film kinda wastes its cast and has nowhere near the same empathy for its characters as the '72 original. It's a fun time, though! Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Nov 4, 2025

Foregoing the blood, sweat, and characters that made the original Adventure come to life, this one's all about running cardboard cutouts through the CGI paces. Go to Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending Aug 19, 2025

The cast isn’t bad, except for an a one-note Kevin Dillon, they’re just unable to make lemonade out of the paltry lemons the screenplay gives them. The one stand-out is Mike Vogel, who lights up the screen and turns a nothing role into something meaty. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Robert P @Superbad Sep 27, 2026 not near as Good As the original movie starring Shelly Winters! See more Romas M @Romas Aug 15, 2026 Greetings from Lithuania. "Poseidon" (2006) isn't a great movie by any means. Characters are non existent, and plausibility of many action scenes are again non existent. Yet it is a solid adventure disaster flick with excellent special effects that do hold up very well in 2026. Upon revisiting this movie on 4K UHD disk that I bought I did enjoyed it more then initially in 2006. There are plenty of great actors here that do solid job. Sound design is excellent and at running time 1 h 35 min it never draggs. Overall, "Poseidon" is a fun, excellently staged adventure disaster flick with excellent special effects. See more James L @RT03596513 Jul 6, 2026 I love this movie, action filled and just a great work of art. To be honest it does not look like a movie from 2006, it looks like a movie from like I don’t know 2024.
