Critics Consensus

Molly Ringwald gives an outstanding performance in this sweet, intelligent teen comedy that takes an ancient premise and injects it with insight and wit.

The movie is a charming, funny update of a very old story, and Ringwald gives a fine performance, but somehow the picture never quite reaches the heights.

Cinderella going to the ball is, after all, the ultimate prom story. So it's no wonder that Pretty in Pink—a silly-sweet teen update—comes off like a hip fairy tale.

Another of [Hughes]' glimpses into contemporary teenage life that is certain to find a young audience eagerly waiting its arrival. They will not be disappointed.

The director can't modulate the enemy-camp melodrama at the movie's core.

Growing up is hard to do, as Pretty in Pink so effectively reminds us.

A limp teen angst film that has none of the inspired joy of its predecessors, Sixteen Candles or The Breakfast Club.

Glad to finally see it. I probably would enjoy it more if I grew up watching it. John Hughes was working through stuff in the 80s. If I grew up watching it like Breakfast Club I don't see it.

Pretty in Pink is one of those classic films that somehow completely passed me by, and I’m honestly shocked I never watched it before. After finally seeing it, I completely understand why it has remained so beloved. I genuinely enjoyed the storyline, the characters, and the overall 80s atmosphere. Ducky was definitely one of my favorite parts, and I also loved seeing Annie Potts. The cast brought so much personality to the story, and the relationships felt compelling enough to keep me invested from beginning to end. The directing and screenplay worked extremely well together. The film captures the feeling of the 1980s without making the story feel overly complicated. It focuses on relationships, friendships, social differences, and the emotional challenges that come with figuring out where you belong. What surprised me most was how relatable it still feels. Even decades later, the themes haven’t completely disappeared, which gives the movie a timeless quality.

It’s outdated at times, but still watchable. It’s a classic.

Seen it for the first time - I never been a Molly Ringwald fan and so glad she opted out of "some kind of wonderfull", as ai love that movie since it came out. I find the acting very unprofessional and the Blane guy not charming at all. The music is the only thing I recommend. Also, what is that horrible pink dress in the end? A sack of potatoes? If you want to see it for the 80’s era, go for it. Besides that, I cannot recommend it.

An 80’s classic with a strong nostalgic charm 40 years later.
