Critics Consensus

Pretty Woman may be a yuppie fantasy, but the film's slick comedy, soundtrack, and casting can overcome misgivings.

The impersonal direction is Garry Marshall's, whose work here amounts to a glistening mixture of sleaze and misogynist clichés. Go to Full Review

It fits into the romance genre but it has some disgusting ideas to impart about what you can get out of a relationship and how men and women view each other. It’s misogynistic in its treatment of female characters who are not Ward... Go to Full Review

Sam X @Sam2316 2d Classic and timeless. Love it! See more Scorch @Scorch9 Jan 18 this was just a lot of fun. roberts and gere are both just great here. they both just work off of each other so well. both of their characters are really interesting and really well written. it's just so great seeing the 2 of them grow as the relationship between them evolves. full of funny and memorable moments while also having its deep and serious scenes. does a really great job at talking about this topic. it focuses on self worth and moments of discrimination quite well too. honestly a little ahead of its time in that way. also absolutely adore that final scene. See more Yoosik Ethan O Jan 12 Finally saw this recently on Disney+. Not bad, a nice quiet journey of these two growing to know each other. Great chemistry with Gere and Roberts, who really steals the show. Not really a plot here, but it’s not the kind that needs one I guess. Pretty good, but Roberts’ best romantic comedy is by far Notting Hill. See more Christian M Dec 4 'Pretty Woman' surprised me far more than expected. Despite my initial prejudices, it turned out to be a much stronger film. Richard Gere delivers a natural, elegant performance, while Julia Roberts brings energy and vulnerability to a predictable yet heartfelt character. The story is easy to foresee, but the script is precise and raises subtle moral questions. It contains absurd and illogical moments, yet they oddly work in its favor. The cinematography is simple, serving the characters’ journey, and the direction supports the narrative effectively. Memorable music and agile editing keep the film engaging. Blending romance and light comedy without melodrama, it focuses on a woman finding her place. I assumed it had nothing to offer, but watching it on my father’s recommendation made me realize how wrong I was.
