What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ridley Scott's ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions, but it's redeemed by its haunting visual grandeur and compelling performances -- particularly Michael Fassbender as a fastidious android.

Prometheus recaptures the essence of not only a beloved franchise, but also an admired yet complicated genre many filmmakers attempt but few successfully. In short, it shows the amateurs how it's really done. Go to Full Review

Even if the movie's logic ultimately spirals down into a vortex of hysteria, horror and hokum, I enjoyed the bulldozer intensity of the climax, which barely keeps a lid on the crackpot cult movie that's wrestling for the soul of this... blockbuster. Go to Full Review

With poise and great artistry, Scott crafts a world that combines high-tech science, primal beginnings, human frailty and sheer horror. Go to Full Review

Yeah, I love the film. It’s a big budget version of a stupid 80s alien-rip-off. That’s how I view it. It’s not canon, obviously. It’s a rip-off film like Galaxy of Terror but made by an immensely talented filmmaker (not storyteller). Go to Full Review

"Prometheus" is a modern, stylish, cerebral, and gorgeous exercise in science-fiction and terror that earns its place right along side Scott's films that defined both him and the genre Go to Full Review

Prometheus may not be a satisfying prequel, but it more than makes up for it by being a fascinating sci fi film to unpack. Go to Full Review

Yaaron R @KompetenterMedi 19h A Stunning Shell Without Substance Prometheus looks phenomenal. The production design, suits, ships, and alien environments are consistently striking. Unfortunately, strong visuals cannot hide weak writing. The dialogue feels stiff and unnatural, making it hard to connect with the characters. While the film gestures toward big ideas about creation and humanity, these concepts remain superficial. The central mystery lacks satisfying explanation, and most performances are merely serviceable. Michael Fassbender’s David is the clear highlight, bringing an unsettling intelligence to the film. In the end, Prometheus offers impressive imagery but little emotional or narrative payoff. See more Tyson D @Spudsprout 1d (Overall Rating: 3.08/5) (OK) ----- (Cinematography: 3.5/5) Pretty typical for a Sci-Fi film, but there definitely were some very visually appealing shots/scenes. --- (Storyline/Plot: 3/5) Fairly predictable at times, I was left with a few questions both in good and bad ways. Intriguing none the less. --- (Acting: 3/5) About what I would expect for a movie of this type but Michael Fassbender raises the bar here. --- (Character Quality: 3/5) David was the bright star in an otherwise fairly mundane space. --- (Entertainment Value: 3.5/5) I was never bored, it was solid throughout but not edge-of-my-seat for any long durations of time. --- (Expectations vs. Reality: 2.5/5) Watched the trailers when this came out, looked cool, never watched until now. Was excited to see it. A bit let down honestly. See more Carlos H @carloshenriquec 3d Honestly, I refuse to believe that there are people who dislike this film, because, in addition to expanding the Alien franchise, Prometheus brings up themes and philosophical debates that are extremely intrinsic to humanity. Who hasn't looked at the night sky and wondered, while admiring the vastness of stars: "How did the Universe come about? Did God actually create the Universe and all things? What is our purpose on Earth? Is there intelligent life beyond our own?" In my opinion, Ridley Scott condenses all of this and delivers a contemplative film, full of allegories and layers to be debated. His direction remains precise and thought-provoking; the main cast is competent and has great on-screen chemistry, especially Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, and Guy Pearce. The cinematography and soundtrack are impeccable, transporting us to the scenes that unfold on LV-233. An incredible and impactful film that deserves to be seen multiple times.
