When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.

Dustin Hoffman's portrayal of Raymond is light years away from the big lunk Lenny in Of Mice and Men or the deaf-mute girl in Johnny Belinda. It is, quite simply, the most memorable, impassioned performance of the year.

Rain Man was much more enjoyable on a rewatch. I love a film that makes me emotional (in any way). Today it’s easy to forget that most of Tom’s characters in the 20th century were usually dicks. That’s the case here and Charlie has a really good arc. The directing is great, I love when cinematography relies on long lenses a lot. There’s some nice editing and good pacing, while the production and costume design are good. The soundtrack is memorable and beautiful. The casting is perfect, Dustin Hoffman deserved that Oscar and Tom Cruise gives a great performance as well.

A great movie to watch for the acting. A little bit less exciting as far as the storyline goes, with a rather meandering plot. If you're not enthralled by the acting you might find it a tad dull.

A fine film that's beginning to show its age. Some of that was visual, especially Tom Cruise's very 1980s hair, but the sound dated it even more. Hans Zimmer's synthesizer-heavy score almost made me cringe at times. In contrast, the new remastered print looked excellent. Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise worked very well together, and there were fun cars throughout.
