Critics Consensus

It's noticeably subject to the law of diminishing returns, but Rocky III still has enough brawny spectacle to stand in the ring with the franchise's better entries.

It would be true to say that Stallone has improved as a director, delivering a short, almost staccato movie which zips through the whole fable fast enough to prevent familiarity breeding contempt.

Stallone is distinctly at his best when the film takes off into almost abstract montages of ;music or images, or in the nifty choreography of the fights.

Rocky was a right hook that hit satisfying home: Rocky II was a good follow-up left: Rocky III is a redundant flurry of fisticuffs long after the match has been won and the referee has raised the victor's arm.

It’s amusing that the filmmakers can continue to use the existing actors in new ways, this time having Creed serve as a trainer and ally.

All up I think this is probably the best of the Rocky films in visual terms, but its story is severely lacking and its depth is non-existent.

The Survivor song, "Eye of the Tiger," might be the best thing about this film which has Rocky going against Mr. T as Rocky's adversary.

A marginal improvement over its predecessor due to the embraced maturity and given strength that pushes the fighter’s own confrontation under appreciative portrait dynamically fulfilled, standing in the franchise’s ring as one of the most enjoyable as well emotional on the same level. (B+)

I enjoyed the movie; it was entertaining and engaging, featuring a story with some touching moments. It follows the journey of the "Underdog" character as he achieves his dream, proves his worth, and gains fame—transitioning from a quiet, stable life to becoming somewhat reckless and arrogant. Ultimately, the character suffers a setback and returns to his true self. The line "There Is No Tomorrow" was a powerful, pivotal moment in the film, and the famous song "Eye of the Tiger" was moving and beautiful. However, I felt the pacing dragged a bit at times, and I prefer the two previous installments.
