Critics Consensus

An old-fashioned spookfest, this Salem's Lot won't be the definitive adaptation of Stephen King's famed vampire tale but it makes for a passable reintroduction to a new generation.

As a stab at making vampires physically and spiritually threatening again after a run of fictions more sympathetic to their outsider status, Salem’s Lot is intermittently effective. Go to Full Review

By no means the disaster many might have expected following its years-long delay. You’ll like it. Not a lot, but you’ll like it. Go to Full Review

Despite all of its promise, Salem’s Lot is a shell of King’s acclaimed novel, encapsulating none of the terror or devastation of the vampire tale and instead falling flat on every level. Go to Full Review

Robert P @Superbad 1 day ago Salem's Lot is a *2* star Movie! See more Daniel C @indymann1212 2 days ago RUSHED! Nonsensical and short. The fact that HBO Max/Time Warner decided to re-adapt Salem's Lot into a movie and not a mini series in the age of streaming is utterly and without a doubt the most short-sighted, myopic, idiotic and infuriating decision ever made. Not only is the HBO Max streamer really light on new content, but the source material is a 400 page book. The multi-layered sub plots, character back stories, and whole characters are completely missing. The film is rushed , cut down, chopped up and made for and by people with non-existent attention spans. Horrible. Basically a trailer compared to what could have been. Who makes these decisions. These producers live in a bubble and get their jobs based on who their mommy and daddy's are instead of having an inkling of respect for the original material or any shred of creativity. I consider this a travesty. The only good thing about this is the Gordon Lightfoot song. See more Nathan J @TribianiRamoray Oct 3, 2026 Rated: 5.2/10 My gaming is packed with survival horror, so checking out this King adaptation felt right. It’s meh; the creepy vampire visuals are solid, but the plot feels rushed and hollow. The Director's Eye (What Worked): • The drive-in climax with vampires using cars as coffins is an awesome set piece. • Pullman brings a grounded energy to Ben, making him easy to root for. The Friction (What Didn't Click for Me): • Cramming a massive book into two hours makes the madness feel super rushed to me. • Deaths didn’t hit hard since it never takes time to build characters up. • The second half is messy, jumping between attacks without letting the atmosphere breathe. The Verdict: It’s meh. Watch for a fast popcorn vampire flick. Skip if rushing a slow-burn book annoys you. See more Drew F @Drewfrost20 Sep 22, 2026 It was good. Wouldn’t watch again. A lot better SK stories out there. See more Javed A @Ja1665 Sep 18, 2026 Lacks bite the vampire scenes are great See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly Aug 29, 2026 Is this yet another movie in which Lewis "Bob" Pullman briefly looks sad or lonely? Maybe it's just a coincidence with his movies I've watched so far. This adaptation of Salem's Lot is decent. I haven't read the book yet, but I've been meaning to. The major issue I had with this movie is that the color grading pushed the contrast and color palette so far that it became aggressively apparent as the chaos of the vampire infestation began to unravel. The shadows are very precisely black and specifically placed on the screen. The vibrancy of the hues, such as the warm tones of the sun and sunset or the soft tones of blue, is dialed up with such intensity that these colors are practically bleeding off the screen. It was just too much. See more Read all reviews
