Critics Consensus

Revolving around outstanding performances from Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott, Sanctuary confounds expectations with élan.

Director Zachary Wigon’s Sanctuary is trying very hard to be both thrilling and erotic, but all that comes through is the effort. Just watching is exhausting.

It’s a love story, sort of, and whatever limitations are set by the location are obliterated by the performances.

It's exquisite... Very sophisticated, and not very much about sex, either.

It knows when to be cold for dramatic effect and when to show the wounds of its characters as a means of grounding them.

This dark claustrophobic comedy, confined largely to just two people in one closed space, is not only hampered by these limitations, but even more so by the fact that these two people are really, really annoying.

Although almost nothing happens besides two people talking, the two lead's palpable chemistry creates a steamy entertaining ride. The artistic production and witty script elevates it even more.

It started out feeling a bit like an SNL satire, and then honed in and clarified who the two characters really were, their needs and their deeper feelings. Some review had called it a Rom-Com, which I couldn't see at the start but which was in fact very apt. We enjoyed it.

it all depends on how you watch the movie. if you watch it as a quirky little weirdo love story it's a very good.
