Critics Consensus

A slimy, B-movie homage oozing with affection for low-budget horror films, Slither is creepy and funny -- if you've got the stomach for it.

Its science fiction elements are thinly conceived, while the use of rubbery practical effects and lame jokes feel much closer to the work of the Troma brand where Gunn got his training wheels.

Slither is a visceral experience from the first, but as the creature grows, so does the film's daring.

Gross-out horror comedy is my least favorite genre, but this movie's so skillful I have to take my hat off to it.

Bolstered by superfine practical effects, the film revives a substantive squick that had begun to seep from the genre with Hollywood’s digital turn.

As the movie rolls into the last act, Troma veteran Gunn takes the brakes off and lets loose - propane tanks, flesh and explosions, oh my - in a climax tailor-made for rowdy midnight crowds.

Despite the general lack of fresh ideas, the half-send-up and partially-earnest thriller still musters plenty of entertainment value.

Slither is gloriously gross, funny and proudly B-movie. James Gunn already displays almost all the traits that would define his later work: rowdy humour, lovable misfits, playful violence, disgusting creatures and a recurring family of actors led here by Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion. Elizabeth Banks provides an essential emotional anchor while the film gleefully indulges in slime, prosthetics and body horror. Not every early-2000s joke lands, and the excess will be too much for some viewers, but the practical effects and manic energy give it real personality. It does not reinvent horror, but it combines its influences with enough affection and confidence to stand on its own. A wonderfully nasty mixture of "ugh" and laughter, and a fascinating early blueprint for the James Gunn who came later.

This movie is more interested in being shocking and gross than actually being good. Animal lovers are strongly advised to avoid it.

This has to be one of the best horror Sci-fi movies since alien. The practical effects are great. These slugs are creepy as hell and the woman in the barn scene is the best. Great cast and characters lead this movie and the performances were top notch. Love the use of country music!!!!! Tim Treakle
