In the 23rd century, the Starship Enterprise is dispatched to the scene of a giant energy field about to engulf two ships. Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) averts calamity, but is exposed to the field and presumed dead. Years later, the Enterprise's new commander, Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart), learns that one of the disaster's survivors, Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell), plans to enter the field by destroying a neighboring star. Picard now must collaborate with an unlikely ally in order to stop him.

Critics Consensus

Generations stands as a mediocre changing of the guard for crews of the Enterprise, with a dull plot that sometimes seems like an expanded episode of the television series.

Star Trek: Generations feels like such a miscalculation of the show’s strengths.

Three things make the film worthwhile: [William] Shatner's performance; the sequence involving Data getting his "emotion chip" implant; and John Alonzo's crystalline cinematography, which makes Generations the most beautiful Trek ever.

It's well-plotted, cleanly staged and, on the whole, not badly acted.

I do not hate Star Trek: Generations, but at the same time it is a difficult film to entirely like.

The result was perhaps not what devoted fans hoped for, but in its own right, it's a solid production and entertaining Star Trek adventure.

For every good moment there are two or three awkward ones, and while there is an undeniable thrill of seeing the two “generations” of Enterprise captains working together, it is hard not to wish that the film had more grandeur and more guts.

It starts off with a lovely surprise and then as soon as you see Malcolm McDowell you know he is the villain. Thats the issue with acotrs that can only play a certain role. Plus he is another actor who loves to over do it. Data emotional apect is just annoying! Dissapointing as its the first movie after Next Generation ended.

What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived. After all, we're only mortal. For a film that ought to have been a glorious passing of the torch, Generations instead feels like an awkward compromise between two different visions of Star Trek, neither of which properly takes centre stage. As close to brand-name reliability as this genre gets, Generations feels like such a miscalculation of the show's strengths; it has the ingredients for a great Star Trek film, but spends too much energy on celebrating the past and too little on telling a compelling story in the present. Kirk deserved a better farewell, Picard deserved a better first big-screen adventure, and The Next Generation deserved a film that felt like the beginning of something rather than the awkward epilogue to something else.

Was hoping this would be a nice fresh start from the original series. Nope. It was at least much more of a nice visual piece with solid acting, but I felt it got too complicated, and I'll forget about this pretty quick.
