"Still Working 9 to 5" reunites stars Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman from the original "9 to 5" film, as well as Rita Moreno from the "9 to 5" TV series, Allison Janney from the Broadway musical, and other stars from the television and stage versions of the classic film. Also featured are activists and individuals closely associated with the women's movement, both now and then. The documentary explores the comedic tone of the film and how it resonated with a wide audience at a time when the feminist message was being rejected and/or feared by a large swathe of the population. It further follows how the success of the film spawned various "9 to 5" spin-offs, including a TV series (1980s) and musicals (2009 & 2019), discussing the same issues addressed in the film (and its spin-offs) and questions if the message retains its original poignancy, as well as examining what has and has not changed for women in the workplace over the last 40 years.

Critics Consensus

An entertaining and insightful documentary, Still Working 9 to 5 celebrates the making of a beloved comedy while thoughtfully shining a light on the ongoing fight for gender equality.

This is a straightforward talking-heads and archival-footage kind of project. But the access to the films stars and producers, as well as notable feminist activists spanning the first and third waves of feminism, is what makes this documentary appealing.

We recently wrapped up our Dolly In Memoriam mini-festival with this warm and worthy 2022 documentary, directed by Camille Hardman and Gary Lane. It reunites Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, the late Dolly Parton, and Dabney Coleman, in one of his final interviews before his own passing, to revisit the groundbreaking 1980 comedy and assess just how far women in the workplace have and haven’t come. Depressingly, the answer is not nearly far enough. Dolly recounts the famous story of composing "9 to 5" by click-clacking her acrylic nails during the shoot, probably the world’s most charming origin story for a classic song, and just hearing her voice again, several weeks into mourning her loss, was its own sweet balm. Jane Fonda, a true force of nature at 88, remains a formidable and inspiring presence. Entertaining, informative, and inspiring, follow up your "9 to 5" rewatch with this one right away.

This doubles as a love fest between the three lead actresses of 9 to 5 and a thought provoking look at the still astonishing pay divide between men and women.
