Computer programmer Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) is hired by financial tycoon Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn) to seize control of a weather satellite and annihilate Colombia's coffee crop. When Superman (Christopher Reeve) manages to thwart the plan, Webster commands Gorman to use the satellite to locate kryptonite, the Man of Steel's mortal weakness. But a missing unknown element in the kryptonite -- replaced by Gorman with tar -- causes an unintended side effect when presented to Superman.

Gus Gorman, um programador habilidoso, chama a atenção de seu chefe, Ross Webster, ao criar um sistema que desvia centavos de transações para sua própria conta. Impressionado, Webster o recruta para realizar ataques cibernéticos capazes de provocar desastres lucrativos. Porém, Superman frustra seus planos, tornando‑se alvo direto do milionário, que chega a produzir uma kryptonita artificial com efeitos inesperados. Após dois filmes excelentes, este marca o início do declínio do herói no cinema. O humor escapa do controle, culminando em sequências constrangedoras nas ruas de Metrópolis. Superman vira quase coadjuvante de Richard Pryor, enquanto Robert Vaughn entrega um vilão que parece uma versão diluída de Lex Luthor. Lois Lane sequer aparece, substituída por uma Lana Lang apática — culpa muito mais do roteiro, que tenta ser comédia enquanto lida com um alienígena onipotente. Nada funciona, e até a luta entre Superman e Clark Kent soa absurda. Um verdadeiro vexame para o Homem de Aço.

I heard about how terrible Superman III was but I didn’t expect it to be that bad. The entire film is a soulless rehash of the first two movies with more slapstick and silly gags. It’s a shame Christopher Reeve, the best actor to portray Superman on screen, was stuck with these movies.
