Suffering from insomnia, disturbed loner Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes a job as a New York City cabbie, haunting the streets nightly, growing increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the filthy city. When Travis meets pretty campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world, first plotting to assassinate a presidential candidate, then directing his attentions toward rescuing 12-year-old prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster).

Remove the cataclysmic ending from Taxi Driver and it would be one smashingly good motion picture. As it stands, the film is beautiful to look at, exciting to listen to, but much too much to stomach.

The viewer has no choice, we are forced to breathe the air, gaze through the pupils, and experience the city by slipping into the shoes of a twisted protagonist, the shoe laces tightly tied by none other than a master of his craft, Scorsese.

A great character study/story. A mental health story. A cautionary tale. A good one if you like DeNiro. Bernard Herrnann's final score sadly- full of emotion. So glad it was back on the big screen!

I've put this down as a rewatch, though in truth it's so long since I saw it that beyond a few moments and its iconic reputation, I could recall very little of Martin Scorsese's classic. This 50th anniversary screening provided a perfect opportunity for a refresh/revisit. There's little that's new to say, of course - De Niro is extraordinary, the sinuous score brilliant, the direction masterly, the moral reflection timeless. It has lost none of its power, and has scarcely aged a day thanks to the technical brilliance of the execution. A haunting, troubling, brilliant film which remains a key staging post in the development of an art form.

Taxi Driver is a classic hence I assumed a must watch. The film is slow and it lacks substance. The positive notes lie in the soundtrack which is recurring and iconic, and in the themes the movie touches on regarding the treatment of women and the dating scene in the 70s. The ending is not particularly well made, it is rather absurd and underwhelming. Overall, the film did not fulfil its potential, I expected much more.

Simply over rated. Deniro thinks he's a genius; and maybe Scorsese does too, but I do not. It's a watch once movie, not the "classic" that we've all been assured that it must be. This is not sacred art here folks.
