Tumultuous relationship between Pyotr Tchaikovsky, the most famous Russian composer of all time, and his wife Antonina Miliukova.

Critics Consensus

If at times opaquely and certainly prolongedly, Tchaikovski's Wife elegantly captures a heartbroken woman's obsession with her prominent spouse who struggled with his own censured sexuality.

The film is so lavishly dressed and shot (by cinematographer Vladislav Opelyants) that the human story gets lost in all the handsome but inert costume drama.

The music is an easy choice, but Serebrennikov has found its counterpart in image and in theme.

Some impressive scenes and colorful directing, but overall a frustrating watch. We never learn why Antonia is so infatuated with Tchaikovsky or why she so obsessively insists on staying married to him against all sensible advice. It’s great to see the movie focus on her and largely ignore her megastar husband, but lack of context and characterization make it hard to sympathize with her for long. She becomes a classic annoying stalker and the movie loses its drama.
