Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 6 days ago A weak offering but it has its compensations. The beautiful hilltop Italian town. The idyllic countryside. Violante Placido in all her glory. Clooney himself, more handsome than talented, let's face it. He is an armourer, and, one presumes, an assassin, who finds himself suddenly the target. Departing Sweden he heads to Italy and is soon on assignment to make a special weapon for a client. He fills in time with exercise, befriending the local priest, observing butterflies and banging the hottest lady in the brothel. But has he truly escaped his pursuers, and why are they after him anyway? The love story angle doesn't work because it feels too rushed. I'd say the threat angle is also poorly explained, and the making of the gun less interesting to behold than the filmmaker fondly imagines. Clooney looks fabulous for his age. I've given up hope of looking like that when I get to that number of candles on the cake. I like cake too much. Worth a look but it's small beer. Despite this, it's a beautifully directed and well acted film; more of a steady paced doomed romance with a constant air of tension. I hope it gets the attention it deserves one day. See more Chie 1 @Chieallen Jan 9, 2026 One expects more from George Clooney. His subdued performance could have been performed by just about anybody as it displays no emotion and no complexity of character. Clooney is an automaton working his way through the movie. But he is resourceful; needing a silencer for a rifle, he enters an Italian country garage in a barn and picks up all the necessary supplies to construct one. He goes on the run with only a backpack and hides out in a town where only beautiful women reside. But that backpack! It has all the things he needs for whatever comes his way, including a sport jacket, camera with a long telephone lens, and a Makita power drill. He manages to produce the silencer using an old pipe, some used washers, a mallet and an anvil. Amazing. As the implausibilities mount, the viewer is simply drawn to the beauty of the Italian village and countryside. If this movie had been set anywhere less pretty, and with fewer sexually promiscuous women, it would not be worth watching. With that context it makes sense, but watching it cold, it mostly feels like you're waiting for something to finally happen. When things do kick in near the end, it's satisfying enough, and it pulls the rest of the movie into clearer focus. Overall it's fine. I probably won't remember much about it down the road, but it's a well-made film. Understated, nuanced, beautifully filmed and great performances by the entire cast. I concur with one review that said it’s a bond film for the art house crowd. If you don’t like art and don’t care about film techniques then this film will bore you. See more Read all reviews
