Critics Consensus

While slow to start, The Ballad of Lefty Brown gradually builds into a brooding, sincere, and classically rooted Western anchored by a commanding central performance from Bill Pullman.

Though recycled, the story is well plotted and paced, and the old hands in the cast elevate the familiar material.

For what it's worth, Jared Moshe seems genuinely interested in the role of unflagging decency in a sullied world.

The scrappy first half eventually gives way to a second hour that grows increasingly routine with its newfound emphasis on personal betrayal and political corruption. But it's nice to see Pullman handed a plum leading role.

The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a highly entertaining Western that's worth going along with for the ride, even if the stagnant finale is unable to live up to the rest.

There's a lot to enjoy in The Ballad of Lefty Brown's deconstruction of the western's emblematic sidekick character.

Nice performance by Pullman and well supported by Cathy Baker and Caviezel. Not a classic western but a better than average one and the landscape visuals don't hurt either.
