The film is about as silly as I hope I’ve made it sound and, more egregiously, tedious to boot.

The role gives Jackson a lot to chew on, and to his credit, as always, he modulates between big and not-so-big with exemplary canniness.

The visual effects are chintzy, Jackson’s performance is schticky, and even if Aleem’s script is cheesy, Harlin’s execution of it doesn’t elevate the material. "The Beast" is both a boor, and a bore.

The thin story is incoherent nonsense, of course, but Jackson’s conviction keeps it rolling far longer than it should.
