When five college friends (Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams) arrive at a remote forest cabin for a little vacation, little do they expect the horrors that await them. One by one, the youths fall victim to backwoods zombies, but there is another factor at play. Two scientists (Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford) are manipulating the ghoulish goings-on, but even as the body count rises, there is yet more at work than meets the eye.

Critics Consensus

The Cabin in the Woods is an astonishing meta-feat, capable of being funny, strange, and scary -- frequently all at the same time.

This is, I know, a self-aware film: its clichés are parodies of horror clichés generally, but to subvert a form, it should, first and foremost, work as an entertainment, and it most surely does not.

The filmmakers are less interested in providing a slow buildup to their frights than in splattering the clichés of the form in funny, spirited ways.

At a time when studios seem intent on bland remakes, torture porn, or contrived POV spectacles, The Cabin in the Woods is a strikingly clever, engaging and original horror movie. It’s also bloody entertaining, and highly recommended.

It grows ever more outrageous and entertaining as it barrels toward its take-no-prisoners climax.

A clever skewering of horror clichés that carves out plenty of bloody fun all its own, The Cabin in the Woods deconstructs the genre while also working as a solid entry in it. That the film lives and dies on a stoner saving the day makes it a real treat.

Very funny moments but also pretty horrifying ones. I love that this movie can balance the two.

This classic meta horror film packs so much into a less than 2 hour run time. By turns it is genuinely scary, hilarious, sad, & so very clever. This was my 4th viewing, and it's just as good as the first time (maybe better, as I catch more of it!).

One of the most creative films ever made, it distills every horror movie cliché, justifying them and giving them a greater, surprising purpose. The screenplay is undoubtedly among the genre's most inventive, and the direction is spot-on. The cast is excellent, with a standout performance by Kristen Connolly. One of the film's best features is that, while it justifies the existence of certain genre clichés, it completely subverts our expectations—particularly with the character Marty, who manages to make it to the final act alongside Dana. The entire sequence where these two characters make their discovery—culminating in the release of a horde of monsters and nightmares—is unsurpassed, and the final reveal is shocking and as grand in scale as the film itself. Without a doubt, one of modern horror cinema's rare gems.

More Joss Whedon nonsense.Good actors wasted. Like watching paint dry. Uninspiring and silly.

It’s creepy, bloody, genuinely funny, and packed with enough genre twists to keep even seasoned horror fans guessing. The dialogue has a wonderfully goofy rhythm, the characters are just self-aware enough to make you laugh, and the movie keeps finding new ways to turn familiar horror clichés completely upside down.
