In 1970, paranormal investigators and demonologists Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson) Warren are summoned to the home of Carolyn (Lili Taylor) and Roger (Ron Livingston) Perron. The Perrons and their five daughters have recently moved into a secluded farmhouse, where a supernatural presence has made itself known. Though the manifestations are relatively benign at first, events soon escalate in horrifying fashion, especially after the Warrens discover the house's macabre history.

Critics Consensus

Well-crafted and gleefully creepy, The Conjuring ratchets up dread through a series of effective old-school scares.

The Conjuring's use of tension, atmosphere, and suggestion prove that the scariest thing to an audience has nothing to do with what you see, but what you don't.

Wan uses every horror cliche with blithe confidence. He knows no one is immune if the effects are sturdily built, and not too literal.

The trailer for The Conjuring is scarier than most horror features of recent vintage, and the feature makes good on the promise.

It's really not much more frightening than, say, The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone or Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, but it's modestly elevated by James Wan's relatively restrained direction.

As the hellish experience expands and they [the Perrons] genuinely struggle to find hope, these small quirks turn into something far scarier.

Before The Conjuring Universe, there was just The Conjuring. And I think this movie is fantastic. It’s a horror movie directed by James Wan, what did you expect?! For starters, Ed and Lorraine are probably some of the strongest protagonists in all of horror. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s performances help their characters immediately become iconic. Their chemistry is great, and the characters are instantly lovable. I also really enjoyed the family that they help in this movie. They also have a very believable family dynamic. There are also some good jumpscares and effective images of terror once again due to the great James Wan. This is an amazing movie that every horror fan should watch. It’s one of the greatest “possession/haunted house” movies ever, and even if you don’t plan on touching the sequels or the larger Conjuring Universe, this movie alone is worth watching.

10/10. 100/100 One of my favorite horror scenes of all time with Joey King’s character and performance. That scene with the score, especially in theater was immaculate. Terrifying. Always gives me goosebumps! Rewatched with Chloe Lainhart at home, during our Conjuring Universe watch through. Chloe: 8.5/10 “When I was younger a 10/10”
