Everybody believes the white pastor. The black guy is supposed to know how to rap. No one believes the black people, even the police and the black lady, while they have proof. Everyone in the neighborhood owns a gun and can’t wait to point it at the black men. Black guys are arguing nonstop over nonsense. There are positives, but the screenplay has enough problems that I couldn’t overlook them. With a stronger script, this could have been much more effective. James Van Der Beek adds another layer because he plays a villain in one of his final performances before his tragic passing. He does a good job, but his presence doesn’t erase the movie’s problems. A film shouldn’t automatically get a pass because someone involved has passed away or because it tackles an important subject. Ultimately, the screenplay still has to work. Mason Gooding does a solid job and continues to show real potential. However, I think he needs to become more selective with his projects. Lately, too many of his films have been average, and that could hurt his momentum. The Gates is worth one watch, but it’s not something I’m rushing to recommend. Always that 1 irrational friend that plays victim all the time even when he makes decisions the aren't influenced by anyone else. Some aspects of the film are accurate with things that are racially motivated amongst some areas of town.
