See more Richard L @KaneLives Jul 12 A marvel of set design and digital effects - and little else - The Haunting (which seems to have nothing to do with Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House') is a wonderful product of its time, shot on sets the likes of which we might never see again, but populated by empty puppets of characters, acted to absurdly low standards aside from a decent Neeson, filmed by someone who supposedly thought he was orchestrating a ride in Disneyland, with a main character who's more messed up and unrealistic than the entire house ever could be. Not as rotten as critics at the time said it was, but nowhere near fresh enough to have a second bite either. The nostalgia plays a huge part in my love for it, but it is worth a watch. Just don’t come in expecting the plot to be super on point. Growing up, I loved the plot, and thought it made a lot of sense, now I see it has many missing pieces such as character development and follow up. As a remake, it strays so far from the 1963 original that it feels like a completely independent film, which I expected, so I can’t say I was too disappointed. In fact, I genuinely liked it. It’s not great, but it entertains me throughout its two-hour runtime and never becomes boring. Narratively, it’s richer, with more subplots and layers, though it loses much of the reflective depth and ambiguity that made the original so compelling. The tension between the rational and supernatural is weaker, and Eleanor’s emotional complexity is far less effective here. The horror also feels more exaggerated, fantastical, and direct, losing the subtle psychological fear of the original. Still, the visual presentation is striking, the house remains captivating, and despite weak character writing—especially Dr. Marrow—it works as decent commercial entertainment, even if it lacks the mystery, elegance, and depth of the classic.
