Critics Consensus

The Incredible Hulk may not be quite the smashing success that fans of Marvel's raging behemoth might hope for, but it offers more than enough big green action to make up for its occasionally puny narrative.

The climax is a bit of a yawn, but most of what precedes it is vigorous and sharp.

Norton makes for a wiry, curious Bruce Banner. But you can tell from the film's tedium-inducing smackdowns that a different philosophy prevailed: the artificial Zen of video-game playing.

That rings true of the entire movie. Jagged edges, cut corners, missed opportunities, yet somehow still charming and, in the end, workable.

The "forgotten" MCU feature is now available on Disney+, and it remains an interesting if flawed vehicle for Edward Norton that might have taken the Avengers saga in a very different direction.

Okay so this definitely got better as it went on, but wow that opening credit sequence is so corny. I get that this is a 2008 film, but it felt like a 90s film with the hokey edited supercut. I think this movie's a little different than much of the other MCU though, cause it was one of the first and they hadn't established a broader tone or style yet, and they were intentionally going for an homage to the original 70s TV show, so they've got comic book framing and some really lame zoom-ins and other stylistic choices that don't age well. Mostly these complaints are in reference to the first third or so. But honestly it got a lot better as the movie went on, and the action sequences are really good. One of the cool things about 20 years ago is they didn't have as much they could do with CG. Obviously the Hulk is CG, but a lot of the action and the sets were real effects, real explosions and demolitions, and it's just better... [continued on letterboxd]
