Critics Consensus

A beautifully animated history lesson, The Inventor seems somewhat uncertain as to which audience it's trying to reach, but it remains amusing and often engaging.

It's a role written for Stephen Fry... it's perhaps harder to know exactly who the audience is.

Charming and informative as it is, the film may struggle to engage younger audiences accustomed to more overt comedy in their animated movies and less grave-robbing.

It’s a bit of a bore and a chore, and feels like the kind of “educational” film that will be foisted on kids in class during wet playtime on rainy days.

There's a charming old-school element to the animation, the character design reminiscent of vintage Magic Roundabout, but the history lesson aspects of the narrative are perhaps a little too advanced for younger viewers.

The animation, reminiscent of the '60’s Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, serves to reinforce a sense of innocence and sweetness. And it offers children a real-life super-hero who never stopped asking questions.

There’s little to hold the attention of younger watchers. And even a cameo from the Mona Lisa can’t raise a smile.

Overall good. I think my daughter, 8, was a bit too young to know the characters. Ages 10-13 could probably enjoy it more or get more out of it.

Wonderful animation, lovely music, and a nice break from typical modern animated movies. Love the return of 2d animation and all for the stop motion.

Bringing Leonardo da Vinci’s story to life through stop-motion animation may not quite measure up to the finest examples of the genre. What is certain, however, is that these efforts have their own charm and are entertaining for those who aren’t too demanding.
