Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, harrowing and moving story that takes an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing and its changing culture. Focusing on a 2021 expedition, this documentary follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara, a party of mountaineers who set out to be the first to summit K2 in the winter, when the mountain’s conditions are the cruelest. The men soon find themselves sharing the treacherous ascent with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients, and a Nepalese team no longer content to help Westerners achieve mountaineering glory. “The Last First: Winter K2” takes us to the icy heights and unpredictable weather of K2 and reveals a surprising and layered story — one of strategy and determination, class and caste, money and power — all under life-and-death circumstances.

There’s some deeply poignant footage here. Some of it was apparently too intimate to make the final cut. But such personal moments are key to keeping the film moving. Go to Full Review

Amir Bar-Lev’s film means well but struggles to stand out among other extreme mountaineering documentaries. Go to Full Review

The result is sobering and illuminating, paying respect to those who never came home from K2 while arguing that they should still be alive today. Go to Full Review

Amir Bar-Lev studiously stitches together a powerful procedural overview of what occurred up on K2 in 2021, across a strained three months that ended in terrifying tragedy for some, and tainted triumph for others. A tough, yet telling watch. Go to Full Review

There's plenty of drama in this trek-gone-wrong documentary, which details a summiting expedition that got 10 to the top but left five dead. Go to Full Review

The Last First is a film told with a good amount of severity and criticism, but it’s also uniquely entertaining in its ability to feel like a thriller. Go to Full Review

David A @RT46928943 1 day ago Powerful and tragic See more S P @S1337 1 day ago A good documentary about the reality of mountain climbing. It gets harder and harder to watch and the ascent progresses, and we can vicariously project ourselves in the shoes of those who were there. One thing that does not die is the will of man to go forward despite all odds, and that's is the same adventurous spirit that guided the great explorers to who we owe so much at this day and age, and it's a nice hommage to that spirit. Indirecty an ode to mankind's thirst, as well as letting the viewer decide for himself on the level of criticism each one deserves for what he did or did not. Recommended not only for fans of the genre but also those who are looking for their limits. I cried See more V Y @Vivivi8 Oct 3, 2026 This is not a documentary. K2 is one of the hardest mountains to climb. Many of those making comments should not be there. Death would be expected. They are lucky if they decide not to do the summit. It is a poor excuse for discrediting other alpinists. Please do better. See more Read all reviews
