Darja S @darjasuri May 13, 2026 No jump-scares. Just dread that builds so slowly you don't notice until you can't breathe. Set in 1843, full of religious symbolism, and deeply underrated. Feels like a cousin to The VVitch — and that's a compliment. A little history needs to be discussed as this part of Long Island was part of Connecticut up to around 1800 before the oblong trade with NY. Most of Connecticut was Puritanical UCC Congregationalist and Christmas was banned in CT up to 1810 I believe. Also, US is going through the Great Awakening religious revival. The film is very dark as use of candles and lanterns which play on the theme of Scott and Furman's forbidden lesbian affair which will be handle by the witch granny. Witches get black moving fingers at "death.: " note that. Movie is not scarry but more of an intellectual reasoning into the horror sort of like "The Witch" with Anya Taylor-Joy. Hating their own daughter because she prefers the company of women. It's creepy good.
