One night per year, the government sanctions a 12-hour period in which citizens can commit any crime they wish -- including murder -- without fear of punishment or imprisonment. Leo, a sergeant who lost his son, plans a vigilante mission of revenge during the mayhem. This one does capitalize more on the premise of a "Purge" compared to the first film, which felt like a basic home invasion story. This one focuses on three different groups who, for various reasons, find themselves downtown during the purge. This one likewise dives more into the political background of why the purge came to be. On the negative side, the majority of the characters they introduce suffer from the classic horror movie tropes. They make dumb decisions, they are annoying, and they fall down when they are running away. Frank Grillo shows up to work and is the most likable character of the group. But other than that, this might be a step in the right direction, but still short of success.
