Critics Consensus

With its recycled plot, misguided gags, and formula performance from Jonah Hill, The Sitter adds up to another disappointing entry from director David Gordon Green.

The movie is funny right from the start, tells its story economically and never comes close to wearing out its welcome.

Now is the time, surely, for David Gordon Green to return to the arthouse Terrence Malick persona that first won us over a decade ago.

David Gordon Green's latest beer-soakage comedy contains one, just one, reminder of what made him a hugely promising independent filmmaker a decade ago.

Director David Gordon Green [...] does little to prevent this derivative riff on Adventures in Babysitting from being compared to better movies that inspired it.

The Sitter runs under an hour and a half, but sitting in a dark theater, forced to watch it, you feel that hours of your life are slipping by.

A fun 2010s era comedy to sit down and watch with a couple of drinks.

Great movie. Why it gets so much hate i have no clue. I think this is such an underrated Jonah Hill flick. I mean it’s not serious at all and the kids are great. The girlfriend sucks, like she’s the worst, but it all ended up working out. Entertaining and fun for the entire things.

WHY do they bother showing bad movies on "cable" like HBO. Many are not watchable. Want more subscribers?... showing good content would be a start.

It's like if someone took like a Superbad type of script and merged it with an Adam Sandler comedy you'd get something like this. This easily could've came out in the late 90's-early 00's. The humor is terrible in this filled with dumb slapstick, way too much toilet humor constantly, dated references, and is just stupid. At first it's actually kind of good but once he becomes the baby sitter it's amazing how much it just tanks in quality and just never recovers. Everything is usbpar and the pacing is terrible. The music is just out of place late 80's Hip Hop which is so odd and half the time it's just dry with nothing playing. It also just feels like stuff just happens wih the drugs, each of the three kids subplots, the forced dual romances, the gang stuff, it's just ridiuclous and almost like a modern day screwball plot. Hill is just ok, sometimes it feels like he's trying and others it feels like he's sleepwalking. Rockwell as always isn't bad and the best thing in this with such an over the top ridiculous character. Skip this.

One of Jonah Hills funniest films and definitely his silliest. "The bible is a hot book," will forever be one of the funniest lines of all time.
