I think Malick is probably one of the most overrated filmmakers in movie history. The Tree of Life helped me come to that opinion. Any movie that has lines like, "Love every blade of grass!", delivered earnestly, not with tongue-in-cheek, is a movie that needs an editor. Navigating through its flaws, however, The Tree of Life, with its visuals and a genuine, heartfelt theme, is not only worthwhile but also the kind of picture that may very well change lives. To me, it’s a wonderful, atmospheric and mesmerizing film about the human condition, each individual’s tiny place in the vast cosmos, the magic of life, the difficulty and complexity of living and human nature, the coexistence of the spiritual and reality, of love and hate, of mercy, compassion, joy of living with the pain, cruelty and emptiness. Didn’t see any pretentiousness, only sensitivity. The ending is an ode to hope for humanity. Visually stunning, disarmingly lyrical, shot in beautiful and original broad strokes. I felt deep empathy for the family which embodied humanity - both very personal story, and at the same time all-encompassing and universal from the origin of life on Earth to death and the cycle of life. Nature has one of the major roles in the film along with the actors. See more Read all reviews
