Critics Consensus

There's Something About Mary proves that unrelentingly, unabashedly puerile humor doesn't necessarily come at the expense of a film's heart.

If the Farrellys don't know yet how to arrange a group of actors in a shot, they do know how to exploit [their cast] to the fullest, and how to push a joke to its breaking point; their taste is as bad as their timing is exquisite. Go to Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post Feb 3, 2009

Robert P @Superbad Oct 1, 2026 There's Something About Mary = a 3.5 star Movie! See more James H @RT22708432 Sep 14, 2026 Just re-watched it. It was funny when it came out and it’s so funny in 2026 – I remember my 70 year-old mother watched it when it was new and she was telling me it was so funny but not to tell anyone that she had saw it– if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll understand that, that too was funny to me. Miss my mom. See more Jonah H @Delune Sep 13, 2026 Absolutely Hilarious Scenes! The acting and makeup team knocked it out of the park! See more Stevie F @Bigfoot123 Jul 26, 2026 A true classic. There's Something About Mary

Ted (Ben Stiller, right) and best friend Dom (Chris Elliott) prepare to get in even more trouble. Cameron Diaz as Mary unknowingly sports a zany hairdo, the result of using some unusual "gel." In front of an astonished Mary (Cameron Diaz), Ted (Ben Stiller) gets the hook. Ted (Ben Stiller, right) confronts the back-stabbing Pat (Matt Dillon). As a worried Mary (Cameron Diaz) looks on, Ted (Ben Stiller) is carried to an ambulance after an accident involving his "family jewels." Mary (Cameron Diaz) and Pat (Matt Dillon) enjoy an evening out. As his girlfriend's parents (Keith David and Markie Post) look on, a young Ted (Ben Stiller, left) gets some help when his "family jewels" are caught in his zipper. Lin Shaye plays Magda, Mary's agoraphobic, faux-glamorous, widowed, ultra-tan housemate. View more photos
