Critics Consensus

To the Wonder demonstrates Terrence Malick's gift for beautiful images, but its narrative is overly somber and emotionally unsatisfying.

Although the filmmaker often puts specifically Christian imagery into his film, his sensibility turns out to be more Zen: he can find manifestations of glory in both the noblest gesture and the darkest impulse. Go to Full Review J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Feb 22, 2019
Where The Tree of Life was sanctimonious, To the Wonder is about the failure of sanctimony. Go to Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Sep 7, 2017

Though Malick has a knack for enhancing the mood of each scene with stunning visual effects, it's not enough to boost the film. Go to Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Aug 23, 2024

Despite a lackluster script, I think the performances are exactly what Malick, the director, was wanting out of them. Go to Full Review Sofía Ochoa Rodríguez En Filme Nov 23, 2022

To The Wonder isn't a diatribe or a lamentation. It's the celebration of movement, of the existence of earth and water, of a woman's hair and face, of the possibility of human contact in moments of loneliness. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Sep 6, 2022

Shannon F @Shannond Aug 29, 2025 Excellent cast. If you like women twirling around in Fields and in rooms messing their hair begging him for love and in return get a stone face emotionless man until it's too late. See more Leprechaun K @LeprechaunKing Mar 1, 2025 Visually stunning in every frame, but the storytelling is incoherent at best. Affleck was also a miscast. He just doesn't have the depth to portray the lead in Malick's spiritual experimental film. I think the movie would have been more interesting if Affleck's and Bardem's roles were swapped. See more Michael E @RT83626469 Jan 6, 2025 This movie litterally wasted two hours of my life that I'll never get back!!!!! It has a FANTASTIC CAST with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko. But I litterally almost DIED OF BOREDOM when i wasn't falling asleep.....because of boredom!!!! One of those DEEP THOUGHT movies with almost NOTHING to think about. I'm a fan of these actors........but the movie was simply terrible!!!!!!!! See more Isaiah Y @zayman2 Nov 18, 2024 Disliked by many for not being a traditional Hollywood film, but only reaffirming Terrence Malick’s talents See more Sanja S @RT00012012 Nov 17, 2024 Wasting of almost two hours of my life. 🙄 See more CG B @RT57471310 Jul 18, 2024 No plot, no acting, no meaningful dialog. Artsy to a fault, to the point of zero anything. A totally useless and meaning less waste of time. See more Read all reviews
