Tony feels as if it has come pippin’ hot out off the griddle; it’s the cinematic equivalent of a fiery flambé depicting a talented man’s coming-of-age odyssey as he goes on to discover that there is far more to a clambake than he ever thought possible.

What follows is immensely pleasurable to watch in places, and Johnson builds up to a surprisingly poignant ending. But it’s mostly a film about Bourdain falling in love with the drama and chaos of the kitchen.

Thankfully, in an era of toxic machismo, "Tony" is likewise self-aware enough to mock rather than celebrate its protagonist’s wannabe bad boy pretentions (even as Sessa keeps us rooting for his character).

Not every biopic needs to cover everything. Tony scratches only the surface, but it does what it needs to, it never sags and, at just 106 minutes, it never outstays its welcome.

"Tony", the story of Anthony Bourdain's summer in Provincetown, Rhode Island. Dominic Sessa, in the titular role, is excellent as he portrays Bourdain as a young obnoxious jerk (Bourdain himself admitted as much) who travels to Provincetown in search of a girl (Emilia Jones) after he is rejected for a fellowship at Vassar. Soon, in Provincetown he ends up working for a chef (Antonio Banaderas, in a great performance) to earn his keep - chef lets him sleep on his hammock as Tony is broke. He meets various characters including Leo Woodhall as fellow employee Sal - who is the good-looking bad boy that a lot of women fall for. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but the movie is full of pathos as well as humor and suffice it to say I really enjoyed it. Direction by Matt Johnson is good and the cinematography by Michael Buamann is excellent - you will want to visit Provincetown after seeing the beautiful scenery. Period recreations are good as well. Highly recommended - 8/10.
