Critics Consensus

Director David Schwimmer gets some gut-wrenching performances out of his actors but he still lacks the chops to fully ratchet up story tension.

Even if it's a mite clunky, Trust does a decent job and avoids the regulation happy ending. Go to Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian Jul 7, 2011

It is also moving, thoughtful and a lot more insightful than most of the dramas dealing with the issues it tackles. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Iain W @RT81164875 Sep 4, 2026 This film does a decent attempt at showing the dangers of online grooming, and is an uncomfortable watch at times as a result. It seems to be trying to draw some parallels with the youth of some advertising models, and the penchant some older men have for younger women (the bar scene), but doesn't really seek any payoff for these ideas and they could have just as easily been left out. Some things are a bit up-in-the-air - the father stealing evidence to support his own investigations, and there being no punishment feels like something which slipped through. Overall the film manages to reach it's conclusion without feeling rushed - characters get to their final outlook sensibly, and the film doesn't try to end with a happy ending which is good. Maybe not a great movie, but these days it is perhaps one for teenagers to be shown. See more Michael P @TheeMichael-jai Mar 17, 2026 Unsettling and terribly uncomfortable. See more Tim B. @SlimTim0707 Jan 21, 2026 Trust isn't really a thriller. It's more of a drama that explores deeply unsettling subject matter that is very rooted in reality, especially at that time when effective independent predator catching groups had yet to emerge. The movie is well written and Clive Owen, Catherine Keener, and Liana Liberato all deliver solid performances. There also seems to be some subliminal messaging drawing parallels between the subject matter and the model industry Clive Owen's character works for. Trust should be judged as a film and not by how good or satisfied you feel at the end of it. See more Ronald H @RT44372985 May 25, 2025 The main lesson derived from this melodramatic, histrionic mess is that teenagers are idiots. See more May 13, 2025 The predator guy was super annoying. She didn't even like when she found out he was 20. But 25 and really old r ok? And an old guy going after a 14 yo was too weird. See more Deana W @RT01677414 Apr 4, 2025 Clive Owen’s character was so annoying. The guy thought he was being helpful. It would have been better if from another perspective. See more Read all reviews
