The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for 'Vermiglio,' Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico), who hides out in town after deserting the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family's eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). 'Vermiglio' shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family's past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through Lucia's perspective 'Vermiglio' feels distinct and novel.

This was a beautiful movie that evoked a moment in time… although I was surprised to reread the description that it was just after WWII. This remote village in the Alps was a traditional community… it seemed more like WWI to me. The opportunities for women were very limited. I enjoyed the movie.

Classic art house, definitely not for those of popcorn movie persuasion. Best Italian film l have seen these past few years. Takes its time, allows the characters to develop, lots of children in it. Beautifully shot, at heart concerned with familial love and loss of innocence.

Lovely to look at, but very slow moving — certainly no need to be 2 hours long. If you cut out all the beautiful scenery and brooding it would run all of 15 minutes. Some of the most interesting parts of the story (like the relationship between the matriarch and patriarch) were only hinted at, and not delved into.

Dictated on the ethnographic method and if it should not be clear I will hang a map on the blackboard for mapping the places. How many palms of hand are there from Trentino to Sicily? Can something unusual be added to a veristic landscape? There is no intention. Photographic pride elbows its way through the narrative; I want to impose my images on you, devoted handmaidens, from the Mazzinian bundle; and on those vivisected crosses in the snow, there is no arguing, remarkable. It is a narrative that we were taught very well in school and probably here we want to emphasize that all of this has led us to what will be the sexual revolution and the movement of '68. Is there still something revolutionary in a nun who smokes?
