Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. I knew coming into this franchise I would like it. I was not expecting to love it. I think what helps here is that as this trilogy went on, it got better, and I was emotionally connected to each film. After Dawn, I knew this had a chance to be a finale that would work in every way, and it did. Well done to everyone here for such a successful trilogy of films and storytelling.

This third chapter brings a magnificent conclusion to one of modern science fiction's most consistent trilogies. Director Matt Reeves moves away from conventional action spectacle to deliver a dark, intimate drama focused on survival, morality, and humanity's decline. The screenplay brilliantly explores Caesar's self-sacrificing leadership and the Colonel's desperate fanaticism, faltering only slightly due to pacing that drags a bit in the second act. The visual effects work and digital performances remain the emotional backbone of the story.
